Have you ever heard of a push present? It’s a gift that is given to a new mother, usually the day her new baby is born. It’s a way of saying “Thank you for creating this life. I love you.” I know a lot of women who have gotten jewelry, maybe the baby’s birthstone. Almost always, the push present has meaning, and it’s something to be cherished. Knowing that, I feel so honored that I was hired to document a Fresh 48 Hospital Session, as a surprise push present. Lori, the new mommy, didn’t know I was going to come, but her husband knew she would love the gift. We’ve worked together on everything from Breastfeeding Photos, to babywearing photography session, and I even photographed their pregnancy announcement. Rob knew that Lori felt comfortable with me, and my work, and that this was something that she would, in fact, cherish.
Being on call for a birth is always really exciting, but the element of keeping this one a secret made it extra special! I was so afraid Lori would figure it out! Rob kept me updated on how her appointment went, when she went into labor, and then the next morning, when little Saige made her arrival! The funny thing was, back when we photographed their pregnancy announcement, I told them don’t be surprised if she was born on my daughter’s birthday. Every year, a little one joins the March 18th club, and I just had a feeling….
Sure enough, Saige came the day after St. Patrick’s day! I was overjoyed to be creating images of all those fresh little toes and wrinkly fingers, remembering sweetly how it felt to discover all those things on my own daughter, 4 years before. Time goes by quickly, and too soon those wrinkly fingers are wearing nail polish and learning how to write. Birth photography reminds me to slow down and savor it. Kiss those little piggies. Squish those cheeks. Breath in that sweet milky baby scent.
Rob’s gift to Lori, this Fresh 48 Photography, is going to bring back all those feelings, every time they look at the images. It’s my hope that on Saige’s 4th birthday, they’ll look at these photos and say, “when did she get so big?” That the day Rob walks her down the aisle, he can look back to these images of his newborn baby and remember the first time he danced with his daughter, swaying her to sleep in his arms.
As for sweet Saige, I think she was given a gift, too. Do you know how your siblings looked when they first met you? How much you were loved unconditionally, even from the start? She will! While her big brother was a little bit shy at first, he came around and gave her a lot of smiles. There’s going to be a lot of laughter in that relationship.
