Northwest Ohio Maternity Photographer, Ashley Short Photography | Amy’s maternity and family portraits

Many years ago, I was the wedding photographer for a Northwest Ohio couple.   They have blossomed into a young family now, and I was lucky enough to get to photograph them in the portrait studio shortly before their second daughter was born!

Amy didn’t just want to do a maternity session, she also wanted to take some family portraits of the three of them, so I made sure to get a combo of the three of them.  (Who doesn’t love toddlers hugging the baby belly?)

Mommy and daughter share the love for the little girl that they are eager to meet!

I know a lot of women like maternity sessions where the mother wears a button up shirt and jeans that are unbuttoned, but that’s just not my style.  In fact, clothing in photography isn’t my thing at all.  I’m a birth photographer- that’s about as raw as you can get.  I enjoy taking breastfeeding photographs, that’s pretty intimate, too.  To me, it’s all about connecting with the person in the image, as well as the connection between the people in the image.  I like to keep it simple, and I think that the style of clothing can often give us an opinion of people, without knowing anything about them.   So…  now you understand why I prefer my baby belly photos to be done in draped fabric.  It’s timeless, it’s beautiful, it allows the person to shine through.  Besides, look at that perfectly shaped baby belly.

Made in God’s perfect image.

I believe that pregnancy is one of God’s most beautiful miracles!

When we had finished up Amy’s maternity session, I asked her to write down whatever she would like to say to her new baby.   She looked at me like I was crazy, but did it and handed me the paper, maybe a little more emotional than moments before.   Two weeks later, she came back for her purchasing session and I had designed an album featuring her handwritten letter on one of the pages.   These days, nobody seems to write handwritten letters, and I believe that many years down the road, little Lyla is going to just adore the album from when she was in her mommy’s belly, complete with a letter to her.  She will always know how much she was loved, before she was even born.  How amazing is that?

Mommy’s letter to her unborn baby. I think her daughter will cherish this when she’s older!

  • Oh my goodness, your idea of having the mama-to-be write a letter to her baby on the way is SO creative touching. It’s another way you have created your sessions to be intimate, endearing, and memorable. I can imagine the mama being pretty emotional after writing a letter to her baby who she has not yet met, describing her hopes and dreams for her future as she grows into her own person. From maternity sessions to birth stories to breastfeeding, I love how you incorporate so much emotion into the photographic journeys you document in Toledo!ReplyCancel
